‘Let It Go’ From Frozen Is the Hottest New Club Anthem

Just when you thought no one could possibly make another version of “Let It Go,” the signature song from Disney’s hit animated film Frozen, someone came along and turned it into a club remix.

Yes, really. And here’s the thing: it’s actually kind of sort of weirdly quite good. You get Broadway legend Idina Menzel’s powerful vocals paired with some stereotypical dance beats and bass lines and pumping rhythms. What could go wrong? Just admit it, this makes you want to get yourself to the nearest club and fist-pump the night away.

Turkish Military Shoots Down Syrian Jet

Posted: 23 Mar 2014 09:38 AM PDT

A Syrian airplane was shot down on Sunday by the Turkish military, which claimed the jet had violated the country's airspace.

"Our F-16s took off and hit this plane," Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said. "Why? Because if you violate my airspace our slap after this will be hard."

The Turkish military said a Syrian MIG-23 plane entered Turkish airspace near the Kasab border crossing, where Syrian rebels have been fighting forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad since Friday. A Turkish F-16 shot the Syrian jet down with a rocket. Syria says the pilot was able to eject before the plane crashed, Reuters reports.

Just six months ago Turkey shot down a Syrian helicopter that entered its airspace in the same area.

DNA Tests Needed to ID 4 Killed in N.J. Motel Fire

Posted: 23 Mar 2014 09:10 AM PDT

(POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J.) — Authorities say DNA testing and other methods will need to be used to identify the four people killed in a motel fire at the Jersey shore.

Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Al Della Fave (fahv) said Sunday that it wasn’t clear when the victims’ identities would be released. But he said the county medical examiner’s office hoped to have its work completed within the next few days.

Della Fave says fire investigators are still working to determine how and where the fire started.

The blaze broke out around 5:30 a.m. Friday at the Mariner’s Cove Motor Inn in Point Pleasant Beach. About 40 people were staying there at the time, including some who had lost their homes in Superstorm Sandy.

Eight others were injured in the fire, three critically.

‘Very Sizable’ Russian Force on Ukrainian Border, NATO Chief Warns

Posted: 23 Mar 2014 09:09 AM PDT

Russian military exercises on Ukraine's eastern border have Western powers concerned over what Russian President Vladimir Putin's next move could be, NATO's top military official said Sunday.

"The [Russian] force that is at the Ukranian border now to the east is very, very sizable and very, very ready," said U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, in a speech at the German Marshall Fund think tank. More than a week ago Russia began military exercises near the Ukrainian border involving 8,500 artillery men, Reuters reports.

Breedlove called it "very worrisome" that Russian forces are positioned to make a run into the Moldovan region of Transdniestria, a Russian-speaking separatist region that shares a border with southwestern Ukraine. The speaker of Transdniestria's separatist parliament has urged Putin to incorporate the region into the Russian Federation, as Moscow did with Crimea, formerly in Ukraine, last week. Transdniestria attempted to break away from Moldova as the Soviet Union was falling apart, fearing that Moldova would unite with Romania.

With Crimea now effectively subsumed into the Russian Federation, Moscow may feel that Transdniestria is "the next place where Russian-speaking people may need to be incorporated," Breedlove said.

Jimmy Kimmel Got All Three Clintons Into a Selfie

Posted: 23 Mar 2014 08:45 AM PDT

Late-night TV star Jimmy Kimmel took some inspiration from Ellen DeGeneres — whose star-studded selfie became the highlight of this year’s Oscars — and decided to pack some influential folks into a selfie of his own this weekend. At an event on Saturday at the Clinton Global Initiative University in Tempe, Ariz., Kimmel managed to get the entire Clinton family into a single photo:

Kimmel interviewed the Clintons and tried getting Hillary to open up about her plans for 2016. She didn’t budge. So, at least the photo is something concrete to emerge from the event. Ellen’s Oscar selfie has racked up a record 3.4 million retweets. It’s unlikely that Kimmel’s will break that record, but it was a noble effort indeed.

California Teen Dies Saving Girlfriend From Oncoming Train

Posted: 23 Mar 2014 08:39 AM PDT

A California teenager was in critical condition Sunday, after her boyfriend died pushing her out of the direct path of an oncoming train.

Mickayla Friend, 16, of Marysville, Calif., was on the way to a Sadie Hawkins Day dance with her boyfriend, whose identity authorities have not released, when the couple took a detour along some train tracks to pick up food before the event, KCRA Sacramento reports.

Authorities say the couple were walking south along the tracks when a train approached behind them. The conductor sounded a warning horn and engaged emergency brakes but not in time.

"The engineer was on the horn," said Sean Stark, who witnessed the incident. "Then finally, they both looked back at the same time." Friend's male companion died after being struck by the train.

"They would have both been underneath that train if he didn't push her out of the way at the last second," Stark said.

Union Pacific Railroad and the Marysville Police Department are investigating the incident.

Turkey Tightens Twitter Blackout

Posted: 23 Mar 2014 08:16 AM PDT

With a ban on the social-media service Twitter now in its fourth day, the government of Turkey has hardened its digital blockade, making it increasingly difficult for Internet users to circumvent the government's censorship.

Twitter has been officially blocked in Turkey ever since Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday he would "wipe out" the service and other social media networks, but users initially found circumventing the ban easy.

Although access to the URL "twitter.com" was blocked, Turks spread a code through word of mouth and graffiti that allowed them to directly access Twitter. Typically your browser converts "twitter.com" into a specific location online (sort of like how Google maps translates a home address into GPS coordinates). Instead, Turks shared with each other the exact coordinates for Twitter, allowing them to bypass the blocked URL.

But as of Sunday, Erdogan has constricted the controls, blocking the direct coordinates that allowed people to access Twitter despite the ban, The Washington Post reports. Twitter is still accessible for the tech savvy via Virtual Private Networks and by using the encryption and circumvention software TOR, though both methods require a slightly more advanced level of I.T. expertise.

Erdogan's government has become increasingly intransigent in recent weeks, after recordings purporting to reveal corruption in his administration were widely circulated on social media. The heightened tensions are a symptom of a deeper divide in Turkish society between supporters of Erdogan—a conservative and an Islamist—and secularists that had long controlled Turkish politics before he came to power.

"We'll eradicate Twitter. I don't care what the international community says," Erdogan said. "Everyone will witness the power of the Turkish Republic."

Report: 1 Dead After Shuttle Bus Overturns on I-95

Posted: 23 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PDT

(WASHINGTON) — A 16-passenger shuttle bus struck a guardrail and overturned before dawn Sunday along busy Interstate 95 south of the nation’s capital, leaving one person dead and several others injured, Virginia State Police told broadcast outlets.

The bus was headed south on the heavily traveled East Coast artery when witnesses reported a speeding four-door passenger vehicle swerved into the bus’s travel lane just before the bus overturned, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told WTOP.

The crash occurred on the interstate in northern Virginia’s Fairfax County and police were called at 3:28 a.m. Sunday, she said.

There were no immediate details on the fatality or the exact number of injuries or their extent. WTOP said two of the injured were airlifted to a Fairfax hospital.

“The shuttle bus was traveling south on I-95 when, according to witnesses, a white, four-door passenger vehicle traveling at an extreme high rate of speed swerved into the bus’s travel lane,” Geller told WTOP.

Geller said the bus driver veered to the right to avoid the car. “The shuttle bus then ran off the right side of the road, struck the guardrail and overturned,” she added.

She said police were searching for a white sedan and added that southbound lanes of the interstate were restricted for a time before fully reopening around 5 a.m. Sunday.

Messages left with Geller by The Associated Press were not immediately returned Sunday and a dispatcher said she had no information to release.

News photographs taken at the site showed police had erected orange safety cones at the site and used floodlights to illuminate the overturned commuter bus. The white bus was on its right side in a grassy area, its rear pointed away from a crumpled guardrail. Crews were visible using a tall crane trying to right the bus. Its windshield was shattered and much of its right side crumpled from the right front bumper backward.

Geller identified the crashed vehicle as an American Transportation bus and that name was embossed on the side of the vehicle. An answering service dispatcher for that company said American Transportation had no information to release.

Kim Kardashian’s Vogue Cover Is So Much Better With James Franco and Seth Rogen

Posted: 23 Mar 2014 07:28 AM PDT

If you, like so many people on the Internet, were outraged that Vogue‘s latest cover featured Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, then perhaps you’ll like these doctored versions a bit more.

First, there’s the cover highlighting the beautiful bromance between James Franco and Seth Rogen. The actors Photoshopped themselves into the Annie Leibovitz cover shot, keeping Kim and Kanye’s bodies intact but replacing their heads. The two had previously recreated Kimye’s video for Bound 2. Rogen tweeted the image, saying “It had to be done,” and Franco posted it on Instagram:

And then there’s the Muppets version which trades Kim and Kanye for Miss Piggy and Kermit. (Oh, and it also trades Vogue for Vague.)

Lady Gaga’s Newest Video Stars a Resurrected Michael Jackson and Several Real Housewives

Posted: 23 Mar 2014 07:02 AM PDT

Wouldn’t it be so disappointing if Lady Gaga’s new music video for her song “G.U.Y.” wasn’t a maelstrom of utterly strange imagery and even stranger costumes, replete with cameos from Bravo stars?

On Saturday, the pop singer debuted her latest video on NBC’s Dateline before making it available online. And when it comes to bizarreness, the nearly 12-minute clip is solidly Gaga-esque. The video for the song — whose title is an acronym for Girl Under You — opens with the pop singer facedown in a ditch as some kind of woman-bird hybrid with an arrow in her back. From there, as the film unfolds, things only become more peculiar.
